A Classic Panorama of Hamburg  - Jungfernstieg and Binnenalster (Inner Alster Lake)

A Classical Hamburg Perspective

Jungfernstieg runs on the southern edge of the Binnenalster (Inner Alster Lake) from Gänsemarkt to Reesendamm. In earlier times, the middle-class families strolled here to show their marriageable daughters. This gave rise to the name Jungfernstieg ("Jungfern" is an outdated term for maidens and "Stieg" is Low German for a narrow or steep path). Today there are shops such as the Alsterhaus, the Apple Store and on the water side the Alster Pavilion, a café and restaurant. The streets Alter Wall and  Neuer Wall with shops of exclusive designers leave from Jungfernstieg.

The Binnenalster is the southern part and with 18 ha the smaller part of the Alster Lake. In the middle of the Binnenalster you can marvel at a water fountain up to 60 m high. In wintertime this will be replaced by a giant illuminated Christmas tree. So there is something to discover here in every season.

Our tips all around Binnenalster and Jungfernstieg

You can easily reach the Jungfernstieg on foot if you get off at stop Nos. 2 (Rathausmarkt/ Heine-Denkmal), 7 (Gänsemarkt) or 8 (Rathausmarkt/ Schlemmermarkt).

Shop extensively, marvel at the Alster steamers and enjoy the center of Hamburg. The Alster Pavillion directly at  the Binnenalster is a gastronomic institution. From here you have a great view of the entire Inner Alster with the fountain.
